Season 4 of Halo Infinite is just around the corner, arriving on June 20, and with it comes the highly anticipated return of the fan-favorite mode, Infection. In a recent post by Alex Wakeford at 343 Industries, the history and exciting features of Infection in Halo Infinite Season 4 were revealed.

Foundation: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Infection mode has a rich history within the Halo franchise. It originated as an unofficial custom game in Halo 2, influenced by popular zombie-themed movies and games of that time. Red Team played as the humans, while Green Team took on the role of Energy Sword-wielding zombies. Over time, the mode evolved with various rules and debates among the community.

The early days of online multiplayer on Xbox Live saw the maps Foundation and Headlong becoming iconic arenas for Infection matches. Lifelong friendships were formed as players gathered to experience the thrill of battling zombies until the late hours of the night. It was in these fiery crucibles that the foundations were set for what remains one of the most beloved modes in Halo.

Iratus Unleashed: A New Chapter Begins

In the previous season, Season 3: Echoes Within, players witnessed their Spartan descending into the hidden depths of the Avery J. Johnson Academy. This black site, established during the Covenant War, held secrets of the Office of Naval Intelligence. However, the Banished AI named Iratus seized control of the academy’s systems, setting the stage for chaos.

In Halo Infinite, Infection brings a new visual flair and flavor to the experience. Iratus, the formidable adversary, introduces distinct effects and enhancements applied to the infected players. Concept art showcases the Alpha Infected, adorned with prominent red holographic effects that cover their armor and helmets. Meanwhile, the Beta Infected display subtler Iratus-themed effects to differentiate themselves from the Alphas.

Thematic Maps and Strategic Opportunities

But it’s not just the aesthetics that have received attention. Infection in Halo Infinite Season 4 also introduces Infection-specific map variants. These maps have been carefully designed to convey thematic aspects of the mode. Players will encounter distortions, digital lightning, and the presence of fallen Spartans as they navigate these infected battlegrounds. These maps offer new areas to hide, temporary shelters, and even blocked paths that could lead to a dead end, adding depth and strategic opportunities to the gameplay experience.

Rules of Engagement: Survive or Succumb

The rules of engagement remain familiar for Infection in Halo Infinite. It is a round-based mode where the Infected team seeks to convert Survivors by eliminating them. Survivors start with limited supplies and must scavenge weapons, equipment, and ammunition from the map to enhance their chances of survival. The goal for the Infected is to eliminate all Survivors, leaving the Last Spartan Standing as the final hope for the human side. The Last Spartan Standing receives special traits, such as an Overshield and unlimited ammo, but their location is revealed to all Infected, intensifying the suspense and challenge.

Prepare for the Infection

As Season 4 approaches, Halo Infinite players can anticipate the return of Infection and prepare for intense battles against the Infected. The post by Alex Wakeford provides an exciting glimpse into the upcoming season, offering a closer look at various elements, including the new progression system, Forge updates, and sandbox balancing changes. With a new janitorial duty in Hell and the impending viral threat, players must gear up, hone their skills, and embark on a thrilling journey in the fight against Iratus.

The countdown has begun. Get ready to face the Infection and experience the heart-pounding action of Halo Infinite Season 4!
